Winter Warmth Project - Part 2
We had absolutely stunning weather when our little group of volunteers stacked up the ute with our packs ready for distribution in Manurewa in collaboration with Shining Light Community Trust. They are down behind the McDonalds in Manurewa every Thursday from 4pm-6pm giving out hot meals, food packs and aroha. It was a privilege to get to join them in their mahi, and be able to put our “Warmth for Winter” packs into the hands of 25 people who are sleeping rough.
Each pack had a tent, a sleeping bag & blanket, personal care items and a beautiful hand-knitted beanie.
We also gave people a little bag filled with home-baked treats and a handwritten card.
There were lots of hugs, smiles and even some tears - and 25 homeless people now sleeping a little warmer.
This was very impactful for our volunteers to be part of, and we are keen to collaborate more with Shining Light, and find other ways to make a difference for people sleeping rough.
“I had always done things on my own, helping people, but after this I know that being part of a team is way better…” (Kasalina)
“When turned up and saw you guys there it just warmed my heart, it gave me a boost…” (Nganu - one of our community leadership programme graduates and a regular Shining Light volunteer. Nganu was the one who inspired our Winter Warmth project).
“I can’t wait to get back out there again - I’ve got ideas for next time…” (Ali)
Remember: just because we can’t solve the whole problem of homelessness, doesn’t mean we can’t do something.
Our volunteers had a debrief over KFC and were already brainstorming our next outreach….
